Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner Was Reelected Today To Keep His Leadership Postion1/3/2013 Today was the day the 113th congress began. With that it lead to the reelection of the Republican Speaker John Boehner. Boehner received 220 votes from the members of the House of Representatives This will be his second term as Speaker of the House. The congress looks almost identical to what it looked like 2 years ago when Boehner first became the Speaker of the House. We still have a Republican majority in the House of Representatives. Democrat Nancy Pelosi is still the House Minority Leader. In the Senate the Democrats still maintain control. Republican Senator Mitch McConnell is still the Senate Minority Leader and Democrat Senator Harry Reid is still the Senate Majority Leader. The leadership in both houses of congress stayed the same. With this new congress I do expect a lot of grid lock. We have the Democrats who control the Senate and we have the Republicans that control the House. We also have a Democrat President in the White House. All of which makes comprise very difficult in Washington. I do expect and would hope Speaker Boehner tackle's the following issues, spending cuts, the nation debt (which is 16.4 trillion and has increased by 6 trillion in the last 3 years), the deficit (doubled in the last 3 years), Welfare reform, immigration reform, as well as Social Security and Medicare reform. This congress has a lot to do and it would be nice if congress can get something done. Finally I think something new should be tried in Washington, maybe they could start reading the bill before we pass it. In the comment section post the issues you want this congress to take care of. Below is the fiscal cliff bill that was proposed to the senate last night around midnight. The bill passed the Democratic controlled Senate and is up to a vote in the Republican controlled House. Republican Senate Minority Leader McConnell Asks Biden To Help With Senate Fiscal Cliff Talks12/31/2012 Yahoo News Has The Story:Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell urged Vice President Joe Biden on Sunday to jump into “fiscal cliff” talks in hopes of breaking an impasse that threatens Americans with sharply higher income taxes come January 1. The Congress has to start working together. Over the last year Republicans have proposed many different bills to avoid the fiscal cliff. In that time Democrats have proposed zero bills. How can Democrats or even Obama and Biden say that the bills the Republican's proposed are not bipartisan enough when they have not introduced one bill to avoid the fiscal cliff.
CNN Has The Story:Washington (CNN) -- Sen. John Kerry, the former presidential candidate who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is Barak Obama's choice to be the next secretary of state, the president announced Friday. Having the Massachusetts Senator become the next Secretary of State does bring some good news to the Republican Party. For Republicans it means there will be a special election for John Kerry's Senate seat. This will allow Republicans to get a new seat in the Senate after losing in 2012. Senator Scott Brown does come to mind as a possible Republican Senate candidate. In 2010 Senator Scott Brown came to the Senate to replace the late Democratic Senator Ted Kennedy.(Click Here For Results) In the last election Senator Scott Brown lost his seat to Elizabeth Warren (Results Here). So perhaps this could be Senator Scott Brown chance to make a early comeback. WBUR/MASSInc released a poll that showed 47% of registered voters would vote for Senator Brown compared to 39% who would vote for a generic Democrat in a special election for John Kerry's Senate seat.
Press Releases From Senator Rubio's Website:"I applaud Governor Nikki Haley's decision to send Tim Scott to represent the people of South Carolina in the United States Senate. I've gotten to know Congressman Scott since his election to the House of Representatives two years ago and know him to be a passionate, thoughtful and sincere advocate for the people of South Carolina and for limited government principles. He is a worthy successor to my good friend Senator Jim DeMint, who remains a role model for those of us drawn to public service and the desire to keep America an exceptional nation. I look forward to working with soon-to-be Senator Scott in the months and years ahead to advance the principles of a limited and effective government." The Washington Post:South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) announced Monday that she will appoint Rep. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) to the Senate. |
